Asked by towing Oct 20, 2007 at 11:23 AM about the 2003 Ford Escape

Question type: General

Is it advisable/safe to tow a 1900 dry weight camper (7 1/2 feet wide) with a 2003 Escape?  Any advice would be appreciated - pro or con regarding towing.

The manual says the Escape will tow 3,500 pounds; most people I've talked with say "no". I'd like to have your reason for "no"? I've heard - short wheelbase, front wheel drive, not enough braking power. I'm used to towing horse trailers, driving tractors w/hay baler and hay cart behind me, so it's not as though I have never hauled anything. My husband is adamant that the Escape cannot pull 1,900 pounds, even though manual says 3,500.

You could do this with the proper hitch, installing an additional transmission cooler, and putting electronic brakes on the trailer you are towing. I think it would be a different experience towing with the escape because of its smaller size, but I see people towing with FWD vehicles all the time without problems.
