I own a 1970 ford fairlane 500. To my
knowledge, it's pretty much all stock.

If its a pull switch for your headlights when you turn the knob it adjusts the dash lights. This switch has a simple rheostat in it for the dash lights which can get dirty with age and not function. Take out the switch and clean with WD40. If that doesn't fix it replace the switch.
That's it I just changed mine a few months ago...
Mine is fixed and working great...
This is the Falcon shop manual, but the instructions will work for the Fairlane...http://falconfaq.dyndns.org/display1.php?Path=Falcon_Shop_Manual_60-62&db=Falcon&table=FSM_6062&Page=11-009
