I have a 2003 explorer 4x4 ATOD with 4.0. Vin 8th digit
K... I'm looking at replacement engine but it's 8th digit
is E. What's the difference an will it bolt up?

Flex fuel vs non-flex fuel. The engine should be the same, but the flex fuel engine has different fuel system parts to accommodate a more corrosive fuel.
