Engine swap

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have an '02 Ford explorer with a 4.0 sohc I pulled the old engine out to
replace it and bought another from a savage yard. I told them over the phone
what the engine was for and they pulled one. when i got home with it i
realized the intake manifold is different. can i just swap my old intake on this
or will there be a problem. Someone told me that engine id's have to line up
or something like that. I should add that this was about 3 years ago ( long
story) so i can;t really even ask the salvage yard any questions about it. also i
found the engine id on the one from the salvage yard but i can't find it on
mine. Thanks for any help you can give

Yes just change over the intake manifold and related parts you need.

Thank you. I have also discovered that the exhaust manifold tube that goes to the egr valve is also on the opposite side of the replacement engine. Any problems there? Or can I just swap exhaust manifolds for that as well?
Yes just swap the exhaust manifolds. Then you would not have any problem bolting up the exhaust, and routing the EGR system. Just make sure that engine is the same as the one you are pulling out. SOHC, NOT a DOHC.

um, how do i tell the difference? the old engine has sohc on the intake but the replacement does not have anything.
This is a V6? So far I am not finding anything with a over head cam, period. Pull a valve cover (s) off, are there just rocker arms on top? Or do you see a camshaft on top? In the mean time I will look around for more info.

yes its a v6 (4.0) and has a camshaft in the one valve cover i just pulled
Yep, just found it, you then can tell by the shape of the valve covers, One has more of a round on one side, the other valve cover looks more normal.

ok. would the dohc have 2 cam shafts under the valve cover and the sohc just one?
No, a cam shaft, one on each side. There are lobes on the camshaft. You old engine has the over head cam on the drivers side.
Yes with a cam gear on the front side that a chain would go around.

ok.on both engines there is a camshaft on both sides. on the driver's side there is a sprocket and a chain in the front of the motors and on the passenger side there is a chain and sprocket in the rear. Then a CHAIN IN THE CENTER THAT GOES TO THE CRANK SHAFT. BTW, i WANT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT i REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR PATIENCE AND EFFORT IN TRYING TO ANSWER MY QUESTIONS.
No problem, fun stuff. So both engines are alike. Lot of chains. Check the chains on the motor going in for slop. Check the chain guides and tensioner to make sure there is life in them yet. Now is the time to do any repair if necessary.
Have fun, always here, except when I have to step out.
