Hi Chloe, Not much to go on here. First, with car OFF, do you shredded pieces of the alt/ps belt, or lots of cross-cuts...or missing chunks...from age? If so, replace that belt. (Note that in '08 Subie started to use a STRETCH AC belt, but I doubt that's the culprit. But if it is you need a special tool to mount the stupid $60 belt. Whenever I get one of these I buy the old- style adjuster bracket and idler pulley and retrofit...total cost is about $75...so that in the far future you've only a normal $15 belt to deal with on the AC. It's a tossup....) Next, restart, open hood, and LISTEN for your noise culprit. Turn the AC/defroster on and off to isolate the AC compressor noise. If the noise seems to be coming from the front low end of the motor, then proceed: Find a simple 10mm wrench and remove the small front-facing bolt on the driver's side upper plastic cover corner. Then pull the cover back with your fingers about an inch (only!). Use a flashlight to see the lower teeth along the bottom run of the timing belt. Push the TOP belt run down with your finger (or stick) and feel it spring back a bit. All ok? Leaving the cover propped open, start the car and let it idle (AC off). Now return with your flashlight and inspect the running timing belt. It should NOT flop up and down, clacking nor rubbing against any of the plastic covers. If you SMELL burning plastic or rubber here then carefully get el Subie to a GOOD wrench who can proceed. If a t-belt is indicated because of a worn idler pulley or tensioner pulley proceed, but IGNORE the waterpump, as they never fail. (Total time is 3 hours + $60 belt and $80/pulley or $125/tensioner if needed: $400-600 max). DO NOT CHANGE THE T-BELT JUST BECAUSE IT'S * YEARS OLD. They last 12 years or 200k+, so ignore others' dogma. There's only a small chance that you have a noisy alternator, as Subie specs an unusually good one with life-long bearings.
