why does the car(1978 Ranchero) run perfect until you turn headlights OFF?

Car has a 460 in it from a 75 ranchero, will start and run perfect with the headlights ON,the second you turn them OFF, the car chokes and stalls out all together

Check alternator output. Maybe the lights are taking up some extra juice? Or maybe someone wired something to the headlights as a quick fix? Obviously under normal conditions the headlights shouldnt affect engine at all.
