Is it a "3 on the Tree?" If it's a column shift three-speed manual transmission, it's very likely that the shift collar is wearing out on the steering column and the linkages are trying to shift into two gears at once. You can pop off the linkages at the transmission (2 linkages on 2 levers) and see if things move. I had a '68 F-100 with a 240cu in. 6 cylinder and a 3 on the tree. Believe it or not, I was able to find a brand-new collar and tube for my truck!
