Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced the plugs replaced both gas filters go to
start it and it floods again. So I decided to rebuild
the 2bbl carburetor. The engine takes along time to
start once running cold or warm if I lower the idle to
650 700 it will still run fine. But after 5min you hear
a pop at first I thought it came from the carburetor
but I swear it comes from the distributor. When it
happens I try and Rev the engine and it just has no
power even advancing the timing it almost comes
back to life. But then dies and back to getting it to
start again the choke works fine. It starts like a old
propeller plane. I am at a loss and embarrassed at
this problem I went to trade school been building
and racing cars since 16 I am 50 now worked for
mostly ford dealerships. I even worked for the FBI
as their head automotive tech and here I am
looking like a lost sheep. The distributor is the
original I pulled it out the gear is fine really no wear
not a lot of play. One time I ran the engine with the
vacuum advance canister disconnected and
plugged and it still did the same. Help me please

I really wish I had a better answer for you but it seems you have done all the right things. But letting it it idle at 700 rpm it will not have good oil pressure, You probably know that the distributor is driven by the oil pump, a safety feature. All I can say is I truly believe the 302 -5.0L- is one off the best engines Ford ever built, it's a proven engine that has been around for decades and worth the effort/time/money to get it going. There is a screw to adjust the fuel/air trim. Close it all the way then turn it back 1& ½ turns open. Best of luck.

Try putting a vacuum on the advance and see if it works and that you get the correct amount of advance. How is your engine compression? I had a 67 Mercury with a 289 and it had a very worn cam chain and once I replaced it the car ran like new. At that time it only had around a 100k on it.

Pertronix sells a high voltage coil to go with the ignition which might help.

Good info FoR. Really. The 289 and 302 use the same piston, the 302 just has a very slightly longer stroke and as a result faster piston speed

Hey guys thanks for the quick response I am still awake over this nonsense. Sorry for the long version but either way going with a new distributor and starter. Then officially everything is new even the whole cooling system has been updated. As I said when it's running I can rev the engine hard and hold it with no hesitation or popping. If I adjust the idle screw to keep the idle over a 1000 rpm. The engine never stalls I have left it running for a half hour with no problems. But as soon as I lower the rpm that's when it happens.
