Carroll Shelby originally went to GM for Chevy engines. That's just historical fact. The proliferation of kit cars and knock offs (started by Shelby) admits lots of engine choices. If you're a Ford purist, go with Ford. If you want something different, Google "crate engines" and have a fun afternoon shopping on the net.
