Fiat 124

Asked by Eric Oct 02, 2016 at 09:56 PM about the 1969 FIAT 124 Spider

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

Hey guys, I'm planning on purchasing a
Fiat 124 for around the $3,000 range, I
would only have 1-2 K to maintain it and
I'm only 17. I do not have much experience
but would it be possible to maintain as a
car to and from school? I won't have much
money, but what are your thoughts? (Also
considering Datsun 240z or Triumph
Spitfire) Am I insain or is this possible?

Those are all cool cars, but they are old cars also. Your budget might be enough to repair and maintain these vehicles if you get lucky and get a good one. If you get unlucky and get one that is falling apart then your budget won't cover the repairs. Your chances of getting a good car at the $3,000 price point is poor at best, just my opinion. Also be sure to check insurance costs before taking the plunge. Best of luck!

If you're going to buy a Fiat, remember this: Fix It Again Tony. Eliminate that one right away.

I bought a 1980 Spider with 58,000 (original?) miles three years ago for $2,800. After I overhauled all of the hydraulic components for the brakes, all of the suspension components on the front end and all of the hoses and belts it has been a fun and reliable car. I put less than 4,000 miles per year on the vehicle. That said, I would not recommend a 124 Spider to anyone as an only car. Most parts are readily available and not all that expensive but waiting for parts does cause some "down time" during which you would have to borrow a vehicle or walk..
