Is it possible to replace the oil pan on my 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis (5L-V8) without removing the transmission gearbox ?

Sure, that's a rear wheel drive car and the transmission is behind the bell-housing, and neither has to come off for engine oil pan. Now cross-members and anything else I don't know, but certainly not transmission.

OOOps....wrong. I found this, you need to see. It's a Crown Vic, but same car. I had no idea: http://www.crownvic.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=16257

If there is enough clearance between the cross members and pan minimum of 3" Inches is needed before you start, You can loosen all transmission and engine mount bolts, raise the engine with cherry picker all mounts must have the nuts removed. If you have six inches of clearance it can be done. It will be hard to do because the oil pump will restrict your movement. Don't try unless have a lift and are really patient.
