when i take the battrey post off the car dies and stops is that the aultanator

No not nessisarily. Some vehicles will run without the battery hooked up some don't. Is your vehicle not charging? If that's what u are trying to test get a volt meter or multimeter you are looking for 14+ volts running at idle. If less then 13 it needs replaced 13 to 13.5 very weak 14 to 14.5 alternator is fine

zak3nn3dy is right, I agree. But is a VERY BAD idea to disconnect the battery while engine is running. The alternator may surge and fry electronics. With engine off, here is a chart - click for full screen
