any tips on where to start when my cooling fan doesnt work and car overheats

WITH ENGINE WARM AND KEY ON ...FIRST CHECK TO SEE IF YOU HAVE 12 VOLTS TO THE FAN/S

ok, its an 89 old cutlas, also i bypassed the AC pulley because belt would not stay on, i used a shorter belt, just wondering if I HAVE to run the belt over the AC even if AC doesnt work??

FIXED! i checked the fan motor first to see if that worked, it did, then I replaced the coolant temp sensor, everything is good now.
