I have a 2001 Cadillac deville that only run hot when the heater is on. What could be the problem

You didn't mention if the heater is blowing cold air while the csr is running hot, if so its possible that the heater core is clogged, if so it's hard to clean and may need to be changed...do you have the corret fluid level is the overflow filled to the correct level.
