spark plugs

spark plug boot comes out but sleeve is preventing socket from seating on plug.   do I use needle nose pliers on sleeve

Sure. If there is any residual damage it can be easily fixed with a new tip and boot. It sounds like you are trying to remove the plug while the wire is still on the plug, is that true? If it is, you can just cut the wire and replace it with a new one when you are done.
