will 87 octane cause the check engine light to come on ?

If that is below the recommended octane rating it could possible make the light come on. Check your owners manual and see what is recommended.

No. You can go to most auto parts stores Checker/Oreilly, Craigens, or any chain auto store and they will have a computer reader they will hook up to your car to get the code indicating what is needed. Sometimes it is nothing more than an oxygen sensor needing replaced
