2001 Ford Escape should have a timing BELT. Replace at 100k miles or per dealer recommended service interval.

Like littlehorn said, it should have a belt and not a chain, they started changing them over to belts in the early 90's.

well mine has a chain.and it is leaving shavings in the oil..making lots of weird noise..help
