ABS and Brake lights always on.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My husband purchased a used 2005 Dodge Rampvan from his cousin so I
can transport my two handicapped brothers in their wheelchairs.  This van is
in need of repair and replacement of many things it seems.  The ABS and
Brake lights are always on and I am concerned even though my husband says
its nothing to worry about.  I am having a mechanic look at the power side
door and ramp as they do not work, other than manually.  Should I have the
same mechanic look into the ABS and Brake lights?

Basically you do want to get it checked out as soon as you can, it can save you during a panic break but if you are use to driving old style cars before they had ABS systems you should be able to drive normally. The Anti-Lock brake system is designed to rapidly modulate the braking action during a panic stop. This prevents the wheels from locking up and maintains vehicle control and stability. On most vehicles, the ABS system will not be functional while the light is illuminated. Usually, normal braking will result unless the failure is related to a component that is used for both normal braking and anti-lock braking.
