Call a transmission shop and see if it's a common problem. Check with other owners on a Dakota forum too. I would not drop the pan - we both know it's not going to help.

Is the rear driveshaft spinning at all when you put it in gear and press the gas pedal? If so it's obviously a problem in the rear differential. If its not spinning then you have a problem in the transmission. The only thing dropping the pan will do is allow you to see if there are any metal pieces or excessive metal particles in the fluid. Changing the filters will not help. And it doesnt work in any gear, reverse, 1st, 2nd, drive?

sounds like your transmission took a dump, sounds like something internal broke

Ok guys just got done putting the trans back together instead of taking it to the shop now im doin burn outs;-). The problem was the oil pick up filter they has a little fitting with a o ring that goes into the vaulebody well the o ring was blown apart in the pan all together a bad design by mopar but theup side is it only cost 53 dollars to fix the fluid cost more than the parfs but thanks for the help.

I think I might have the same exact problem, was yours not going into drive or reverse? And were you able to change the O-ring by dropping the oil pan?

I too have started to encounter this problem with my 2005 dakota. Doesn't happen all the time but occasionally I will put it into drive and my car will not move. After switching to reverse and putting it back in drive, it drives off fine. Anything I can do to prevent this problem before it gets worse? Hoping my transmission isn't going to shit.

I have a 2004 Dodge Dakota SXT 2WD v6, only has about 85k miles on it and I've experienced a similar problem twice now (originally had it under warranty and fixed, problem now reoccurring). Basically after driving for a little bit and after the car warms up, whenever I come to a full stop it's really hard to get it moving again. I'll be in drive and it will rev up to about 5-6k rpm before moving an inch.
