1988 Chevy c1500 Doesn't want to drive over 35 mph

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Bought it running this way about a year ago. Wasn't aware at time, but wouldn't go over
35. You can make it, but runs horrible from about 36 up and will cough, choke, and die
eventually. Under 35 it has ran great for the past year. No smoke, uses no fluids, plenty
power, no rattle/knocks. Great truck for in town, but need to be able to go out town as
well, is my only vehicle. Any ideas? is a 350 motor automatic. Last few weeks it has
started dying when I am idling at a red light or in drive thru lane, not all time, but has
about once a day or so, it starts right back up afterwards. thank you .

Hi, yes as far as I know it is suppose to be the original motor that is in it.
not since I've had it in last year, not sure before that , think that will help ?
I put battery and alternator on it 1st month I had it, then have had oil changed about 3x , otherwise has been great, under 35 mph
k, will utube it and see if is something I can do myself, tyvm , will post again and let you know, ty for the suggestion :)
I agree with possible fuel issue. Could also be cat convertor stopped up.
If you can, have someone read the engine codes. It may be a smog device issue not allowing the engine to get the correct fuel/air mixture. Sometimes it may be a faulty cat that is bogging everything down. Even a computer malfunction at this long of use. Check the air filters also. An engine needs air, fuel, and exhaust to work in proper order to function properly. Any incorrect reading on the computer will cause it to do strange things.
Fuel filter. Make sure it is placed properly, if not, buy another one. It is less than $20.00 Run High octane gas 91 or more on the first gas tank. Let me know if this helped you

Check your tail pipe. That sound like catalytic Coverter it's bad. By checking the tail pipe and someone pressing the gas pedal you should have strong pressure at the tail pipe, if the pressure isn't there, that's your problem. Catalytic need to be replace, good luck
