83 Chevrolet Silverado 6.2L Diesel Pickup
Asked by domineazy Feb 09, 2016 at 02:46 PM about the 1983 Chevrolet C/K 10
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
So I took in the tranny to get it rebuilt,
it's a 700R4. I was told a couple
different things by various people
regarding the type and compatibility.
One source told me that the tranny is
the same on the gas AND diesel
models of an '83 Chevy Silverado. On
the other hand, another source said
that they are completely different
types of trannys. Can anyone confirm
which of these statements are true?
Please and thank you.

Why don't you ask the guy who is re-building your trany? If there were any differences, he would have to use a different kit of parts for re-build. I think they are the same tho.
Well because my dad is the one who took it in to be honest, I wasn't there at the time so I just wanted some more information and knowledge in the meantime, given the fact that I know jack squat about automotives. I'll ask the mechanic. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.
A 700r4 is a 700r4. The only thing that would be unique is the governor wieghts. They will be set to give it a low rpm shift point due to the diesel being a low rpm motor.
