Why won't my car start?

Asked by gepculver Dec 02, 2015 at 09:50 AM about the 2004 Dodge Stratus

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 Dodge Stratus it is a
sedan and has a V6 2.7L engine.
A couple months ago it randomly
would not start. I got a jump, took it to
the auto parts place, they tested my
battery and said it was bad so I put a
new battery in it. About a week and a
half later, it did the exact same thing, I
had my alternator checked and it
showed up as fine so I didn't do
anything else to it. I kept driving it as
it was and if was working normal.
Two days ago I went to start the car
and it wouldn't crank. There was no
noise, but the lights went on. I
checked my starter at the auto parts
store. They said it was bad. Replaced
my starter with a new one. Moment of
truth, went to start it last night.....still
nothing.
Does anyone know what could be
going on? I'm no mechanic and have
checked everything I personally knew.
I would appreciate any tips.
Thanks

I would replace the ground to the battery , they are known for corroding internally , it will cause same issues but will not do it all the time, that's where I would start , good luck hope this helps

Try your windshield wipers, if they do not work with the key on, your problem could be as simple as a blown fuse. I had this same issue and replaced fuse 20, and it started right up! Try this before spending more money or replacing parts.

People check either the range sensor/ neutral safety switch. Should be on the transmission on drivers side I believe. Or the Inertia Switch which is designed to cut off fuel in a fender bender. They sometimes just quit completely...or the button on them needs to be pressed. Mine just quit..pressing reset did nothing so I unplugged it and put a short wire into both pin in connections on plug bypassing the switch. Started right up.. One of these I believe Inertia car will crank n crank but not start cause fuel flow is cut off. Neutral safety on the other hand usually when you turn key all dash lights come on normal if doors open dinging works etc. Radio too but when you turn car to start position you get NOTHING no click no turn over. Nada nothing I know as cars get more and more technical I may be waaay off. But If I turn my key and get lights etc and not click or anything the neutral safety would be what I'd first check if I suddenly just crank I check the Inertia first. Cause it easy and usually located on passenger side kick panel or in the trunk. If that's not it it's on to check for fire and fuel...blown relays fuses or failing grounds
