I have a 98 gmc Sierra k1500 that will start but after running a while dies and won't start. After sitting it starts back up but same problem occurs. Even if its idling and I punch the gas it dies.

Sounds like an alternator issue you should volt test it and see if it is stable and if it is see if it is producing low voltage. Usually you can tell it is the alternator if you jump the car and pull the ground cable off quick it will shut back off.
I am having the exact same problem with my 96 GMC 5.7. Parts replaced and thrown at it with no sign of improvement: plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, can shaft position sensor, crank shaft position sensor, coil packs, coolent temp sensor. fuel pump, EGR, Ignition control modual. It does not have cats as it is an after market exhaust and cats have been removed. What is left?
And no I do Not believe it is the alternator.
