Fuel pump

Just put a fuel pump in and I can hear it staying on  
what did I do wrong

Is it not cranking? Sounds like it has not primed itself, was pick up tube assembly & filter installed correctly or damaged during install? Is there enough fuel in tank for pump to prime ans is gas gauge working.
