Why does it feel like the linkage is broke but
it isn't in a 1998 Dodge Durango 5.2L 4
wheel drive

Shift linkage? Steering linkage? You're asking us to guess. If it is the steering linkage, and because that is a safety hazard, I would suggest getting it checked out asap - sloppy steering may be from a bad tie rod end, and if it goes out while you're driving it can cause you to lose control of vehicle and send you into oncoming traffic or a ditch.
