Question type: Shopping & Pricing
I was wondering what if any, things to look out for with a 1997 Dodge Avenger. I'm looking to buy a personal sale car that has 197 k's, and some sporty racing tires. He is asking 6,000$. I'm wondering if that is a reasonable price? Also, I want to buy a car that is reliable mechanically!!!!

Hello That price is very high for a car with 197,000 miles. I just did a check on KBB for you, and they estimate around $2640 for a car such as this one. You can do the check yourself here: http://www.kbb.com/KBB/UsedCars/1997_Dodge_Avenger_Private%20Party.aspx While there weren't any glaring recalls on this car, Dodge Avengers were only out from 1995-2000 and did not have the type of longevity I personally would prefer to see in a car. I hope this helps. If you really like the car and he comes down in price, it may be a good deal, but I would not take it as it stands right now. Best of luck! CarGrrl
I just bought a 1999 Avenger with 120,000 miles on it for 2,000. So I think they are waaay out of line!
I think it is the 95 to 98 avengers (maybe) that have the same(ish) issues. Handles break (mostly the drivers from what I gather), the boots (black rubbery things that keep dust out of fragile parts behind the front tires), and the headliner... Which I do not suggest doing yourself, since you essentially have to pull the whole dang back of the car out. (Lower back panels, upper back panels, front columns, door trim, back seat, back seat columns... The list goes on.
the automatic transmissions can have a lot of problems. the door handles stop working or break off. window motors go bad. paint clear coat fades. there was a recall on the the lower control arms, this is a big issue, make sure your car had the recall done. the headliner glue stops sticking. think that pretty much covers it.
That is too much for that make and the miles on that car! Don't buy it, the seller is screwing you.
