Engine light on and shifting problems

Asked by panoramicweasel Jan 11, 2017 at 08:56 PM about the 1997 Dodge RAM Van

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

On my 97 Dodge 3500 passenger van, about 4 months ago the check engine light came on and it had problems shifting from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. Then all of a sudden the light went off and it began shifting again. Today this problem started again. I was quoted $5,400 for a new transmission and that is out of budget. Does anyone know what this could be? Why would it go away and come back 4 months later? This is my only vehicle and I need to get it running again.

he light is on because the computer set out a code, goto auto zone or similar place, they will scan the system and tell you the code. Write it down and repost it here so we can help you troubleshoot
