Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've spent $1200. so far changing the oils, a new battery, spark plugs wires and now the timing belt has broken.  Should I repair it for $680.00 ?

Perhaps you mean 1995 as the S40 wasn't made in 1985. I would consider the overall condition of the vehicle when deciding whether to repair it. How does it look, how was it maintained, what is the condition of the interior, how many miles are on it, is the transmission the next expensive item to fail, etc.

What car are you talking about? An S40 or a 1985 240 (or 740)? If you really like the car and it's otherwise reliable, I would fix it. Otherwise, throw it on Craigslist for $800. There are always people like me scrolling through CL looking for old Volvos.
