Alternator overheating/not working correctly.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our 2000 Ford Taurus alternator was just replaced within the last year. Recently the battery light has been occasionally flickering on and off; engine RPM has no effect on light indication. The charging output appears to be normal to battery when checked, regardless of what is running/on/off (lights, turn-signals, fan, etc.)  The alternator was extremely hot after a normal short drive this evening. Any ideas, solutions, or other issues anybody's heard of? Thanks in advance!

i would guess the alternator is trying to run a maximum capacity, thats usually why they get hot, if you put the alternator on, take it back to the parts place you got it and have them warranty it, if you had a shop do the reapirs a year ago, you should still have warranty on it.. ps the light may flicker if its overcharging as well as undercharging. usually the regulator internally is bad.

One strategy for diagnosing a stalling problem that only occurs intermittently is to wait until the problem gets worse before you attempt to diagnose it. It's always easier to find a part that has failed than to find one that works most of the time and only acts up occasionally. ---------------------------- steff patterson alternator

2 things, check ground wire to see if tight, from battery to engine,it is most likely overcharging, not haveing enough amp to charge right. If you bought it from auto zone or advance auto, that is the main problem, also if bought with 1 year waranty,it will go out.
