I removed the drum and the big center bolt. Tried with a puller to pry it off, to no avail! Is there a retainer on the inside of the rearend? HELP!!

No bolts on rear axle cover, just the front pumpkin. Will taking the bolts off the backing plate allow the axle to come out?

You can try it might work but if it was that kind of axle removal the axle would have a hole in it so that you could put a socket, extension and racket to remove bolts.

Being that year they may have not started to but that hole in axle for easy removal.
