Can't be the battery if the dashboard lights come on, so I'm guessing starter motor.

yes it can. just because it has enough to power acc. lights doesn't mean it'll power an engine start up. def. check battery, get a jump. if you crank and you hear a whining noise then it could be the starter. you can try popping the clutch if its a manual and it'll run if its the starter(if its a manual). if it does nothing and its not the battery, check your ignition switch. i dont think itll be an alternator as all it does is keep the battery charged. if it is the alt. then jump it and itll run as long as its connected to another source and you can conclude it is indeed a dead battery due to a bad alt/alt grnd.

When you turn the key to 'start' position do you hear a click? If not the starter relay(solenoid) is likely no switching over. If this is the case remove the relay and bench test it. If you hear the clicking the relay is most likely working(not definitely though) and you should remove the starter and have a parts shop test it. Does that help some?

try tapping on the starter you have one of two problems the small wire on the starter is not getting voltage due to a wiring isue or a faulty relay maybe even posible corrosion on this small wire or you just have a bad starter

Turn on the headlights - if bright the battery is good If there is no noise when you go to start position, power is not getting to the starter motor or the starter motor is NG or the neutral safety switch(clutch interlock switch) is NG. Banging on the starter ( if accessable ) with a small hammer is not a bad idea WHILE SOME ONE IS ON THE KEY TURING AT THE SAME TIME.

sounds to me like it could be a bad battery, corroded terminals, bad starter motor or the battery needs maintenance. I'd pull the service covers on the battery to see what the fluid level is in the battery, use baking soda and water on the terminals to clean them and if it still doesn't work after that test the battery at the parts store and if good you'll want to check all your connections once more and if all good have the starter tested at the parts store.
