Hard brake pedal

97 gmc jimmy, brake pedal is hard to push. Brakes suddenly like slamming on
the brakes.

sounds like a proportioning valve issue.If not a separate component it will be part of the master cylinder.

Ok, I was also thinking power boost. Should I replace both or how,would I determine which is the problem

Well, replacing a rubber vacuum hose would be faster and a lot cheaper then a master for testing.

Checked the hoses, it is not leaking as far as I can tell. I am not very car savvy but don’t want to pay a mechanic to diagnose.

If your not sure just replace the hose,lot cheaper to try than a master,which could still be the issue.
