There's a good chance it's not your tranny- it might be the linkage between your shifter and the transmission- the shifter gets used a lot and if you have a lot of miles on the truck and do a lot of stopping on errands chances are your linkage just got tired of going all the way past reverse into park- I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya
the shifter linkage that bolts on the trans needs to be adjusted. it takes a 10mm wrench and 2 people (1 to adjust the linkege and THE OTHER to shift it back and forth and hold the brake ) and apply the parking brake also!!! It sounds hard but its a 15min. job
Scotty did you figure it out? Same thing happend to me. The answers you got only relate to 1994 or earlier. I have a 1995 , no linkage, cable operated from 95 to current year. As is yours being a 1997. So what did you do?
My 91 linkage was bent & it didn't go into gears properly especially park which made starting it impossible at times but it was not the starter...I concur with the above its probably your linkage luckily & not your tranny...newer models with cables may need cable replaced if they stretched too much.
On a 199s10 pickup replaced shifter cable but column shifter doesn't get all gear only 4 gears
Bar to linkage in shifter column straightened by mechanic goes in all gears again phew...tranny solid
