Could be a bad alternator. The battery had enough juice to start the vehicle but the alternator may have not been working so it wasn't charging the battery while the vehicle was running. So when he went to turn it back on the battery was dead again. That or check for bad connections.
My 2000 is extremely temperamental with the voltage when the alternator acted up the car went nuts with the idiot lights and the idle so best guess is the alternator is shot like kipper33 said.

This happened to me once & it was a bad & corrorded battery cable! Dont replace everything like some people do only to find out it was just a bad + cable, or - cable. The corrrosion "wicks" and can travel thoughtout the whole length. Bend them in some palces & see if theyre brittle.
Check alternator and wiring.
