Smoking alternator.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 1972 vw super beetle, the fuel pump went
out so I installed a new electric one. I drove it
around for 10-15 min and when I got home my
alternator was smoking, I disconnected the
alternator ( it had power to it with the car off) and
it stopped smoking. Also the oil light is on, any help
is appreciated. THANK YOU!

simple your alternator shorted out , oil lit either oil is low or your oil pump is gone out. sounds like a LEMON , BUY AMERICAN , your parts on your car are expensive.
All alternators have power on them when the ignition switch is turned off. Was the alternator smoking or was the belt smoking? I would take the alternator off and get it tested. Which electric fuel pump did you install?
Oh and the oil light is on even if the car is off. The fuel pump I got is repv314515. The alternator was smoking.
Sounds like a short in the wiring. You need to take a very close look at the wiring in the engine compartment. Is it possible that this car sat outside and mice chewed on some of the wiring?
