Not starting and randomly died when I quickly stepped on the gas

First off, I have a 1973 Volkswagen super beetle. I
was driving a couple weeks ago and all was good, I
stepped on the gas to pass someone and my car
puttered out out of no where. I had a guy come by
and he told me it was the fuel pump, so I went to
auto zone got a new fuel pump, put it on and it's
still not starting. There's no throttle when I try to
start it but I know it's not the throttle wire because
it's tight. I'm so stumped on what to do right now,
HELP VW GURUS !
