How Do I best Start a VW bus?

Asked by VW1976HIPPIE Oct 22, 2021 at 05:00 PM about the 1976 Volkswagen Type 2

Question type: General

I have a 1976 VW bus. My question is how best to start it. On old american cars
I push the accelerator down once to set the choke and crank. usually starts
after 1 maybe 2 cranks. Do I do the same with the bus? I have been starting it
by just turning the key and it starts but it always takes 3-5 cranks. Any best way
to do this? thanks.

Pump it once ( nice and easy ) and see if it does better . You should check the carb. to see if the choke is working it may be getting cold in your area . A weirdo V.W. carb. works on the same principles as any other . But if it starts without any primer that's a good sign , keep the linkages clean ..

Yes, when cold, press the accelerator pedal to the floor once and release it. This sets the automatic choke and puts the throttle in the fast idle position. If you have a manual choke, set the choke with the accelerator pedal at the floor position. Release the accelerator pedal and start the engine. For a warm or hot engine, hold the accelerator pedal one quarter to one half way down while cranking the engine. When the engine starts, release the accelerator pedal. Hope that helps! Jim
