Question type: Car Customization

i have a 2000 coupe accord 2.3 (f23a1) and wanted to know what size intake would give the most HP and torque and(mpg) out of it? right now i have a 3inch  with a bypass valve in it. love the deep sound. makes a whistling sound around 2500rpms from the intake. but yet doesn't seem to have a effect on performance. have raced and beatin 2007 eclipse.(4cyl)..

CAI won't create much of a performance increase...at least not on stock cars. The benefits of CAI is the fact that they usually save money via re-usable filters, and once your car is at temperature you have less of a performance loss due to the heat... Additionally any improvements you make to the engine will have a greater affect since your intake won't starve the engine for O2...(well most... it'll help things that increase the flow of gasses into and out of the engine... IE it won't help if you get a high performance ignition system but will help with head work, CAMs, Boreing, strokeing, etc, etc...) That being said... You mentioned it making a 'whistling sound'? That is slightly unusual. Most CAI are as straight as possible and shouldn't be making a hissing. Makes me think your filter isn't sealing well against the intake or a connection somewhere is loose. You could potentially be pulling dirty air into the engine. Sometimes it's just due to the volume of air being pulled in but this is on a naturally aspirated 2.3L which makes me raise an eyebrow. You shouldn't be pulling that much air to where the filter would 'whistle'.

what kind of bypass you running? and 3" is prolly overkill, esp. if you have to use some kind of reducer to hook it to the TB. if the bypass is opening a little at WOT then that could create a whistle, but at least that air is filtered. and good call on the bypass, i ruined my Focus's stock 4 cyl. by accidently going through a pond with my CAI and no bypass. but now im putting in an SVT Contour V6, so whatever.

it also has a crankshft pully and 10mm sparkplug wires. and a front strut bar. if the hissing is coming from not sealed CAI.. would the correct size of CAI be the size of the TB opening? and does size of intake really have differeent effect on the car?

ok. and yes, the correct size is the size of the TB, because anything bigger than that and you're just wasting money. and it will have a different effect, esp. on your maf. so get the right size intake, it'll actually help the car.
