Intermittent problem with 2009 Hyundai Sante Fe whereby engine light comes on and I can't go beyond 40 kmh and even less when climbing hills. Both my mechanic and the local Hyundai dealership are not sure (or at least not convinced) it's the the throttle b/c the problem is only intermittent. So far $400 and problem is still there and recurring more frequently. Any ideas?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Intermittent acceleration problem with my Hyundai.   Engine light comes on and can't go beyond 40 kmh.   Might happen after being parked for a short period (10-20 mins) or as the last two times, while I'm driving.   Mechanic and Hyundai dealer are both not convinced it's a throttle problem b/c problem is intermittent - however that's what the computer read when diagnosed about 1 month ago.   Now $400 later and not wanting to drive other than around my neighborhood...   Any ideas?  Anyone out there experienced this with the same car?

I would go to a salvage yard and pull off a different throttle body. That should solve the mystery. There's one on Ebay for $112.50.

It could be a problem in the emissions pressure and purging system also. Had a similar problem on my 2001. There is a check valve in there that was bad and caused a hard start problem after fuel fill-ups. Did they check for any stored engine codes? Most times when the light comes on it will trigger a code and it will stay in memory. A good code scanner will also tell you that the problem is intermittent (corrects itself) but it will retain the code in the memory so it can be traced and fixed. If they have done this and still can't find the problem, I would lean towards the throttle body, but keep in mind it can also be a sensor or combination of sensors that are going bad and for some reason not giving you a trouble code. Keep us posted please.
