2009 Subaru Outback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My daughter has an '09 Subaru Outback
2.5L. The other night, her dashboard lights
randomly lit ( cruise control, anti-skid, then
oil) , her power steering gave out and then
the car stalled. We had it towed home, and
I tried starting it the next morning. Car
starts and stalls. Checked timing belt (in
tact). Checked oil (full). Changed plugs,
plug wires and filters. Started car
successfully, but the engine raps loudly,
and after a few minutes, idles down and
stalls. I thought perhaps the timing belt
may have jumped a tooth, but would like
some opinions before I spend much more
time and money unnecessarily.

I would inspect the timing belt. How many miles on the current one?

How many miles are on this car? And, when did you last get it serviced?

All the lights came on because the engine quit running. The noise is probably bad news so before you start it again have the timing belt inspected.

"...engine raps loudly..." is the more interesting tidbit here, as a starting and running motor is NOT apt to have a t-belt issue. Yet "rapping" could be a loose t-belt randomly clacking against its plastic front covers if a tensioner or idler pulley fails. But if the "rap" is more from the top center of the motor when idling or revving slightly it's apt to be a damaged rod bearing from oil starvation. In the latter case replace with a good used motor. If a t-belt...well that's easier, but DO check the heads for a bent valve. So with this little info you may need an experienced Subie wrench to continue efficiently. Anything new?
