i have a 97 ford explore does the starter have a cylanoid on it

If you go back more than 50 years you can find old cars that had a starter pedal that you pushed to engage the starter.

These days you typically replace a single starter unit that includes the solenoid.

My 96 has a solenoid bolted to the firewall near the battery. Follow the positive wire from the battery and see where it leads.

Doubtful, OJ, since a solenoid is a mechanical device that engages the gear on the starter motor with the flywheel gear to cycle the engine (like a crank). I think you will find what you are seeing is a relay that then may go to your solenoid/starter connection.
