Volkswagen rarely limits the thier vehicles especially their four cylinders to just using medium of high grade fuels. You should have no problem using any grade of fuel in you volkswagen. use shell 87. It's my favourite for power and mileage. Your vehicle requires a minimum octane rating from fuel to run smoothly because of its ability to ignite the mixure. Octane rating describes fuels willingness to ignite under pressure. Lower grade fuels are actually easier to ignite so in a premium vehicle where the tolerances in the engine are tighter a lower grade fuel may ingnite prematurely due to the pressure in the engine and not due to the firing of the spark plug. This is known as knock(or piston slap) and is very bad for an engine and will eventually lead to complete failure due to a hole in the piston.

We just purchase a 2010 CC sport 6spd manual. Wondering which grade would be best? If we use Shell 87 octane will we sacrifice power or fuel efficiency- lower miles per gallon compared to 91 or 93 octane?

Look on the Gas Door it should say which is suggested to use. I have a 2012 CC 2.0 Turbo and it suggests 91 or above. I also asksd and it is known that you will not get the best gas mileage under 91. Hope this helps

The Octane rating will affect the performance & fuel economy of just about any vehicle. If you are not Racing your car or looking for the best mpg, 87 Octane is just fine. You can experiment with the higher Octanes without compromising any damage to you motor. Try using fuel system cleaners & follow manufacturers recommendations. These will clean interior parts in your fuel sytem for peak performance & better mpg without having to use the higher Octane. Good Luck....

Use the ones your manual says. I'm sure it will say 87 AKI=91 RON. Here in USA, Canada, Brazil and Mexico goes for AKI OCTANE. Higher octane are for engines with a higher compression laike Corvett, Lamborllinis and so on. in your car "CC" does not mean sport but confort cupe.
Jason and Roanes2000 are correct. Octane has nothing to do with "power" output, as the myth seems to have people believing. Octane is simply the structure of the carbon molecules within the gasoline. The higher the octane, the less volatile the the gas is to premature detonation, but the detonation (the fuel's burn), has no more power. Running an octane rating above your cars Recommended will cause no harm, but is a waste of money. So there are two rating for your car. There is "Required" and "Recommended". Recommended means the car will preform best with this octane. The Required mean the car MUST have at least this octane. Modern engine's computers have the ability to 'de-tune' to allow for lesser octane rating. The issue about performance loss really is about the de-tuning the engine must do, in certain conditions (hard acceleration, idle, cruising at speed down the highway, etc) when a lower than "Recommended" octane is used. But if an octane lower than "Required" is used, the engine cannot de-tune enough and the engine could/will see damage, if not immediately, then certainly over time.

@GuruW66BW Higher octane does help with turbo charged engines. They ignite under a higher pressure and allow the cylinder head to be at a higher point before the explosion event occurs. This gives more power because there is a larger volume of compressed air expanding and pushing the cylinder back down. The ECU will detect knocking and advance or retard the engine timing. This adjustment in engine timing is what optimizes the power of the engine based on the fuel used. Higher octane fuels or premium fuels also typically have more detergents that will help to keep your engine clean over time.
A Passat CC with a 2.0L Turbo engine REQUIRES 91 Octane aka Supreme at the pump. Turbo engines have higher compression, using lower octane will make the fuel ignite before the spark due to the high pressure in the cylinder and can damage your engine. Some say the ECU will realize this and detune the engine which would reduce your power and fuel efficiency, some say it won't and will cause Knock and damage your engine. In short, 89 can run, but you will also consume more and have less power... so you save nothing but you add the risk of killing your engine. Also, I have seen so many 2.0 TSI cars with dead engines so... don't risk it. if you can't afford 10-20$ extra ever week or 2 on a fillup, a 2.0TSI isn't for you. Then I could recommend a TDI or a 2.5L Jetta/Rabbit
Well from my experience driving over 45 year and owning a couple VWs Audi's, and GMs higher octane does give better performance, gas mileage and a cleaner engine and fuel system. I drove and still drive somewhere a 1999 VW Passat Ran 93 octane it's whole life, not only did it run better, stated better, preformed better. It still has original fuel pump, original fuel injectors, original everything motor. Same goes for my Audi, my wife's original 99 grand prix, still run stronger than her newest grand prix. My 17 year old riding mower lasted all these years and still runs. I don't use it right now because the bolt fell out of the under carrage that holds the belt pullies on, but still runs, so people tell U to Ron cheap gas, I say don't.It doesn't cost but $4.00 or $5.00 dollars more to fill up with preimum gas per tank and ur engine will give U several hundred thousands or maintaince free miles. .
I'm on my 4th Volkswagen and while I can't speak to "will it damage my engine" (tho I definitely believe the posters above that yes, 87 will do damage over time), I can tell you that when using 91 or 93 in my Rabbit, Jetta and Golf, I got exponentially better MPG - up to 10 more MPG. My concern is the rapid use of gas in gridlock - I went from a 500 mile range to a 380 mile range in 20 minutes covering 1 mile!
I just bought a 2014 CC R Line 2.0T Line from Carmax with 38.6K, It was 3.5 hour away and a great maiden voyage in my new ride. on the ride home i used up the first qtr tank and put 93 shell in ASAP in case thats what car max filled it up with. My last 07 A4 2.0T ran better on 93 period. When i got closer to home and filled it up and shes been the best ever with Shell 93. I though I was hell bent on another A5 or maybe a 5 but this is everything i love about german car and turbo. CC Rline was a home run
