Why is my check engine light on?

Asked by NotCarSavvy Oct 04, 2012 at 10:21 AM about the 2001 Hyundai Sonata

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I started my car, I noticed the check engine light came on (yellow). After a few seconds, it went off. I've read that this is not a problem, and it's just testing the light, but I'm trying to get as many opinions as possible. I first noticed it after I started the car to check the battery after leaving my lights on, and I want to make sure it is not related to that.

when you first turn the key on the car does a light test where most lights on the dash should light up like, check engine, abs, air bag, brake light, ect. Yes it's normal.
