The key broke off the remote. I have the key but lost the remote. Car not
starting, the alarm keeps going off. Does the remote have some sort of chip that
needs to be present for the car to start? Is it just having the key without the
remote enough?

That's right , there's a transponder in the ignition that gets a signal from the key chip telling the computer to run things , your experience may differ .
You can buy just the fob at the dealership. Mine was $140 which is not a bad price at all. You can chance it online but sometimes you never know what you'll get. I bought a fob for my ford focus that way and programmed it myself but it didn't have a lot of electronics, It was a 2007
