Tach just shuts down. Car stalls. Sometimes car wont start... cranks fine does start

Because you say the tach laid down is telling me you lost your camshaft sensor.

the problem is sporadic as when I restart engine the tach usually comes back on. will the sensor prevent the vehicle from starting?

Yes if the cam sensor is bad you will have no spark.
