My 2011 Audi A4 1.8T rattling noise in the engine.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2011 Audi A4 1.8T has some rattling noise in the engine. Took it for service
three days ago and the mechanic told me that it is a normal sound but it seems
like a a timing chain. How can I reduce this? Please HELP!

I'd play it safe Peter and get a second opinion without mentioning the first mechanic. If you have over 100K miles, the timing belt should be inspected/replaced. If the rattle is in fact the belt tensioner, it could break loose and serious engine damage will occur. Other rattles could be lifters, rods and other moving metal parts, but check the belt first. If you notice a sudden loss of power, the belt may have jumped (timing) a cog or two...ready to break. (Diesels "rattle" but this is not a diesel.)
