Error Code Reset on Mazda CX7

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am having a dispute with the local Mazda distributer in regarding a warranty issue. My
question is not about the warranty itself, but they want me to pay a significant amount of
money to reset the error codes on the system. They say that this is because i have been
getting my car serviced by a non Mazda dealership and they need to go through the error
codes one by one and this takes time. Does anyone out there know if this is true or can
they just do a quick reset to clear the error codes?

Most vehicles codes can be reset by unhooking the battery for at least ten minutes. This should clear all the codes. Any codes coming back on after doing this will mean that you still have that codes issue and it needs to be repaired.

Followup Question. Will they see all error codes present or do they have to go through all the old codes one by one until they get to the most recent.

They will want to go thru all of them. Because some of the more resent codes could be due to others misdiagnosing the problems and just replacing parts. Doing this will help them diagnose the issues you are currently having.

Do not disconnect the battery without using a battery saver. I f you do it may not start or everything work as it should. Take it to advance or autozone and they can clear them for free.

Follow up Question, There are no error codes showing on the car, except for the one that is the warranty issue. Mazda dealership is saying is its on the machine connected to the car they need to clear old error codes before they can diagnose the one that is the warranty issue. And they want to change me $100+ to do this and won't start until I pay. It just does not make sense to me, and I doubt this is true. Does anyone know how the computers they connect to the car work?

The dealers can go more in depth and have better service manuals to work with but any garage can clear the codes or like I said take it to advance or autozone and they will do it for free. Don't disconnect the battery yourself though.
