Melissa, the 1992 Explorer was heavily based on the then current Ford Ranger, including exterior styling. The 1996 was also based on the Ranger, but ford dramatically altered the exterior to differentiate between the two models in late 1994. The bumper will probably be able to physically mount to the truck frame, as it is the same, but the shape and fit will be totally different between the different body years. I would say no, it would not fit without some serious work to get it mounted, as the 1996 models were much more bubbly, or in auto industry terms 'aerodynamic'.
