Question type: Maintenance & Repair

i have a 2012 chevy cruze ltz, i noticed that when i turn on the heater or a/c that my radiator fan cycles really fast than normal, every 20 to 30 seconds comes on and goes back off in about 5 seconds. the temp is normal, but the fan is constantly going on and off. the rpm gauge is slightly going up and down, and it seems to be less horse power when i accelarate. it does not do any of this at all if i dont turn on the heater or a/c it runs normal with no problems. can someone tell what might be the problem.

Its normal operation. The fan comes on to keep the coolant temp. at the norm. and when you turn on the a/c the fan will come on the promote airflow through the condensor.

so why does it not do that when the heater or a/c is not on. seems to me it should do it when the a/c is on or off and run the same shouldnt it?

The a/c needs the fan to pull air through the condenser. It should cycle more frequently with the a/c on. Does the vehicle have one or two fans? Alot of times they will have two fans one that will only come on when a/c is on.

You could always swing by the dealer and ask them. A 2012 should have a warranty if something is actually wrong.

I have a 2011 Chev cruise and when anything is turned on with the heater or a/c, the fans cycle on/off on very high speed for 10 seconds, off for 5, then back on again. I have seen this with A/C, but with the defrost on or heater on or just outside air coming in. When the blower motor is running on anything in the climate control, the fans will do this. I just noticed this within the last few months as we owned this since 2011 brand new, Out of normal warranty- just power train left. Anyone help please? Its getting cold and my wife drives this to work and she is now worried about turning the heat on because the fans are so fast and lout and come on/off all the time. This is not normal in heater mode. Engine temperature seems normal and it could be when we first start the vehicle, so its not a over heating issue. Please Help...

When your ac is on your low speed on the radiator fan should be running. Since it is not the high side pressures go extremely high. When the computer sees these extreme pressures it turns the high speed on to the radiator fan bringing the pressures down to normal. All this because the fan controller is not running the low speed anymore. High speed is loud and does not last long. Summary replace the radiator fan and controller assembly.
