Generator Belt

In my 2012 Nissan Altima, my battery light came on.  When I checked the manual, it said that the generator belt may be loose, broken, or gone.  Trying to find the picture in the manual so that I could check this belt made it seem that it was one big belt in the drive shaft, that the car literally has one belt for all the parts.  That seems odd.  Is it so?
